Every day, we use drinking water for drinking, cooking, showering, or flushing the toilet. After use, it becomes waste-water, which flows through the sewage system to the wastewater treatment plant. There it is cleaned and then dis-charged back into our streams and rivers.
To ensure that our sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants continue to function reliably, it is important that only things that belong there are put into toilets or drains. Incorrectly disposed waste causes blockages, damages pumps and equipment, and can pollute our waters and groundwater. Many pollutants can only be removed from wastewater later with great effort or sometimes not at all.
The following does not belong in the toilet or drain:
Food waste, fats and oils
Food scraps, fats and oils clog pipes, cause unpleasant odors, and can attract rats.
Our tip:
- Food scraps belong in the organic waste bin.
- Absorb cooking fats and oils with kitchen paper and dispose of them in the residual waste.
Wet wipes, hygiene products and hair
Wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary pads, tampons, diapers, and hair do not dissolve in water. They block pumps and
cause expensive disruptions in sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants.
Our tip:
- Hygiene products and hair should always be disposed of in residual waste.
Medicines, paints, varnishes and chemicals
Medicines, paints, varnishes, and other chemicals pollute water and can cause lasting damage to the environment and groundwater. In addition, certain substances can create dangerous or even explosive gases in the sewage system.
Our tip:
- Dispose of old medicines in residual waste or take them to recycling centers.
- Dispose of paints, varnishes, and chemicals only at designated collection points or recycling centers.
By disposing of waste correctly, you make an important contribution to protecting our waters and ensuring that sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants can continue to operate reliably.
